A message from the Rector 26th April 2020
Although we are not able to meet together in our beautiful old church building at the moment it has been absolutely wonderful every Sunday morning at 10am to see so many people “Zooming in” to our weekly online morning worship, and to know that others who are not able to Zoom in are using the service sheets which are sent out with this pew sheet to join us in prayer. Thank you to everyone who has worked hard to distribute the invitations to worship and to make these services possible. The online service lasts about half an hour and now includes piano music played by Gill, who is one of our lovely organists, as well as different people reading the bible readings and leading the prayers. There is a short reflection on the readings from myself or our curate Josie. The focal point of the service to which everything else leads are the prayers of Spiritual Communion. At the present time we are unable to receive the bread and wine of the sacrament of Holy Communion together, but we are still able to pray for the presence of Christ to come into our lives and to offer ourselves to the service of Christ. We pray that Christ will “come spiritually into our hearts” and that we will give ourselves up to Christ’s service.
But what does that mean at a time like this to “give ourselves up to Christ’s service”?
St Theresa of Avila famously prayed,
“ …Yours are the eyes through which he [Christ] looks with compassion on this world, yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world…”
Even during the strange and challenging times in which we now find ourselves during this time we can be engaged in the proclamation of the good news of Christ’s love in deed and in word. Every time we remember and respond to someone who is struggling at this moment- perhaps with something as simple as a text or a phone call we are sharing the love of Christ with our neighbour. When we receive an act of kindness from another we receive the kindness of Christ, and in the receiving we bless the giver. As the love of Christ is shared the Kingdom grows.
And we can still share the love of Christ by inviting our friends and family to worship as well, sharing in word as well as in deed. Who do you know who might like to share in our online worship or enjoy our service sheet? Maybe you have friends or family members who don’t go to church, who would find it hard to get to church and walk through the door but who might like to look into our on line service without leaving their home? So this week when you receive the e-mail with the link to the service I invite you to think and pray about who you might share that link with and share the link with the person or people who come to mind. If you are not able to join in our online services, who might you share the service sheet that you have received with the pewsheet with?
Jesus says that, “Where 2 or 3 gather in my name, there am I with them.” I believe this to be as true for our online services in which we gather in a moment in time with those online and those praying with us using the service sheet at the same time, as when we gather in a particular place.
So, who do you know who needs to know the love of Jesus at this time? With what act of kindness will you bless that person this week? With what perseverance will you invite that person to come and worship the living God and know God’s peace in their lives at this time? Even at such a time as this you and I may share in the work of growing the Kingdom- what a privilege.
